A scheme to develop Fangji Island in Maoming has been submitted to the provincial government by Guangdong Provincial Oceanic and Fishery Administration.
If approved, the uninhabited island will become the first entire island in the nation to be leased for development, the Southern Metropolitan News reported.
A Taiwan enterprise in Sanya, Hainan Province, plans to spend 300 million yuan (US$ 36.6 million) to develop a tourist resort and the country's biggest fishing base for tourists.
The country encouraged reasonable development and usage of no-inhabited islands a regulation published last July.
The provincial government would study the scheme, which was considered "comparatively more mature" than plans by other applicants, said the provincial oceanic and fishery administration
