Dapeng Fortress
Where: Dapeng Township, Longgang District
Introduction: Dapeng Fortress was built in 1394 during the Ming Dynasty to protect against Japanese pirates. It is the only historic relic in Shenzhen that is under the protection of the State Bureau for the Preservation of Cultural and Historical Relics. Three of the fortress gates are in good condition. Inside the fortress are stone streets and buildings featuring painted carved beams, columns and greeting notes posted on doors. Many buildings from the past are well maintained, including General Lai and his clan's mansions and General Liu Qilong's mansions.
Highlight: Dapeng Fortress is a major historical site that played an important role in the city's history.
Lotus Hill Park
Where: North of the central area of Futian District
Introduction: The name of the park is taken after the lotus-shaped hill. Covering a total area of 166 hectares, it is a huge public green space. Various species of trees and flowers have been planted in the park. At Peak Square stands a statue of Deng Xiaoping, who is widely regarded as the city's founding father. The parkland, Lotus Lake, kite square and trees are also attractions for visitors.
Highlight: From Peak Square, you have a panoramic view of the city. It is impossible not to marvel at how quickly Shenzhen has developed over the past two decades.
Overseas Chinese Town
Where: OCT area of Nanshan District
Introduction: The Overseas Chinese Town is selected as one of the top eight scenic spots of Shenzhen for its dazzling array of tourist attractions, including the famed theme parks, namely Splendid China, China Folk Culture Villages, Happy Valley and Window of the World. It masterfully combines city life and an urban living environment.
Highlight: Theme parks, cultural displays offered in the area, city life, and a pleasant living environment.
Wutong Mountain
Where: Near Dapeng Bay, Luohu District
Introduction: Covering an area of about 32 square kilometers, Wutong Mountain is in fact a series of hills, the highest peak of which is 944 meters high. This is a favorite place for visitors to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Streams flow down the gullies, and rich vegetation covers the hills. Watch out for the deceptively steep slopes. At the top of "Grave Slope" there is a splendid view of Dapeng Bay, Yantian Harbor and Hong Kong.
Highlight: Wonderful views of the surrounding area, extensive natural woodland.
Shennan Road
Introduction: Shennan Road is one of the busiest and most prosperous of Shenzhen's artery roads. It is 28 kilometers long and features dazzling views of the city. The road is divided into three sections. The eastern section is considered the city's financial center; the middle section harbors commercial areas and office buildings; the western section, which includes the Overseas Chinese Town and Hi-tech Park, symbolizes Shenzhen's rapid economic growth and prosperity.
Highlight: Shennan Road is best seen after dark when all the city's landmark buildings are colorfully lit.
Dameisha/Xiaomeisha
Where: Dapeng Bay
Introduction: With its white beaches and azure water, the Dameisha/Xiaomeisha area is called by many the "Hawaii of the East." It's a great place to relax at weekends. Dameisha and Xiaomeisha have long been hot destinations for both local residents and visitors to Shenzhen.
Highlight: Shenzhen boasts an extensive coastline. Dameisha and Xiaomeisha are two of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Shenzhen.
Zhongying Street
Where: Shatoujiao Township, Yantian District
Introduction: Zhongying Street is famous for being "one street, two systems." It is a former shopping center that straddles the border between Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and as such holds historical and cultural significance.
Highlight: The centuries-old Banyan Tree that bridges the border.
Yangtai Mountain
Where: Shiyan Township, Bao'an District
Introduction: At 587 meters high, Yangtai Mountain is the highest hill in northern Shenzhen. Tens of reservoirs were constructed at the foot of the mountain and there are dozens of small and big waterfalls along the valley. During rainy days mists rise up above the water. Rich in vegetation, the mountain features protected flora and fauna.
Highlight: The mountain is a great place to exercise and get back to nature. A hill-climbing race is held each year. This year, the race will take place on Friday, Oct. 22.
