About 40 black-faced spoonbills settle themselves at the mangrove reserve in Futian District, Shenzhen, Thursday. Dozens of the rare birds have arrived at the reserve to spend the winter. Only about 1,000 of the species are known to exist worldwide.

There are about 194 varieties of birds --- including 24 on the State's protection list --- in the reserve, which is the smallest and only reserve in an urban district in China.
