SHENZHEN will provide outpatient services for gays and lesbians, Chinese-language newspapers reported, claiming it would be the first in the nation.
Five experts from the Barts Sexual Health Center in London have come to Shenzhen to discuss cooperating with Shenzhen's prevention center for sexually transmitted diseases.
AIDS was no different from diabetes if patients can continue to receive treatment, said Claudia Estcourt, one of the experts.
The experts will provide outpatient services to patients with AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and hold experience exchange activities with their Shenzhen counterparts.
The cooperation project was organized by the Ministry of Health and the British Health Ministry, the report said.
The Barts Sexual Health Center treated 1,500 AIDS patients and 75,000 patients with other sexually transmitted infections, said Estcourt.
She said more than 80 percent of AIDS patients were gays or lesbians before 1985 in Britain, but the rate was now 20 percent.
The British Government had provided the center with 15 million pounds (US$27 million), the expert said.
British doctors did not strictly separate homosexual patients from others but considered it necessary to have a special outpatient department to better serve them.
The Shenzhen center for sexually transmitted diseases has promised to safeguard patients' privacy.
