Faced with widespread parental opposition, Guangzhou Education Bureau has abandoned a safe-sex programme they planned to run in the city's senior high schools.
With the rate of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) soaring and the HIV/AIDS time bomb ticking around the world, the bureau intended to take pre-emptive action by educating the young about the dangers of unsafe sexual practices.
Included in its programme to promote sex health education were instructions on the proper use of condoms. However, the parents' response to a recent questionnaire scuppered the attempts of the authorities. Most were opposed to condom instruction fearing that more youngsters would become sexually active. A series of videos and other methods of getting the condom safe-sex message across has been substituted, reports the Information Times.
