121 miners were trapped in Daxing coal mine flood in Meizhou city of Guangdong province on August 7th. Shortly after the accident occurred, President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao gave important instructions, and top leaders of Guangdong Province "take substantial steps and spare no efforts" to save the trapped miners. A total 253 mines had already been ordered to stop production for safety inspections after the accident in Daxing, and 122 mines have been shut down by lacking the required production or work safety licences. In the later December, 23, including the chief of the provincial work safety watchdog and many other provincial-level officials, were given punishment in accordance with the disciplines of the Communist Party of China and government punishment. Another 41 received criminal punishment on dereliction of duty, bribery, or detention. |
