New test enables early SARS diagnosis
Latest Updated by 2003-04-25 17:58:15

Rechearchers at the Beijing University had successfully developed a kit that effectively tests for the presence of the SARS virus in early-stage patients, the China News Service said Thursday.

Previous tests developed by Chinese scientists detected the SARS virus after patients had developed SARS antibodies, but were not able to diagnose people in the early-stages of infection who had yet to develop the antibodies.

Antibodies may not emerge in the bloodstream for a week or even a month after symptoms start.

The latest achievement, which is based on genetic matching, would help doctors to diagnose a SARS patient as soon as he or she develops a fever. Researchers hope this would help lower the death rate of SARS as the current method of treatment is effective on early-stage patients.

Wu Bingquan, a professor with the university who heads the research team, said his team had detected the coronavirus, the virus that causes SARS, in clinical blood samples by using the test kit.

The kit, which tests blood or saliva, is being used on trial basis in three hospitals.
