Guangzhou plans to be ready next time - with a 280 million yuan (US$33.85 million) hospital for infectious diseases to cope with a sudden outbreak.
The municipal government has earmarked the money for the construction project which will begin in November and is expected to take two years to complete, said Huang Jionglie, director of Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Public Health.
Guangzhou No 8 People's Hospital is a special hospital for treating infectious diseases. However, it has not been able to meet demand, Huang said.
A special AIDS inpatient department - with 200 beds - will be included in the hospital. It will be the first official AIDS inpatient department in Guangdong Province, Huang said.
The hospital will help ease the great pressure from the growing number of AIDS patients and HIV carriers in the southern Chinese province.
Located in the eastern part of Guangzhou, the hospital will cover 80,000 square metres and have a construction floor space of 50,000 square metres.
