Guangdong has made great progress in controlling the spread of Sars, said Wang Zhiqiong, deputy director of the Guangdong Health Department, at a press conference yesterday for journalists from 20 foreign media organizations. Wang said that Guangdong has reported no new Sars cases for 26 straight days and the death rate is 3.8 per cent, the lowest in the world. After the conference, the foreign journalists went to visit the Institute of Respiratory Disease Control of the No. 1 Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College, which has treated many Sars patients in critical condition. These journalists were from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Asahi Shimbun, the Associated Press, the AFP and other organizations.
