Guangdong had no new SARS cases reported for 20 consecutive days by Saturday, the provincial health department said.
Guangdong had reached the criteria set by the WHO to be removed from the list of SARS-affected areas, the department said.
But whether the WHO will delist Guangdong immediately remained unknown Sunday. The list on the WHO's Web site was last updated Friday.
According to the WHO criteria, transmission of SARS has occurred when one or more reported probable cases of SARS have most likely acquired their infection locally regardless of the setting in which this may have occurred.
If no new locally acquired cases are identified 20 days after the last reported locally acquired probable case died or was appropriately isolated, the area would be removed from this list.
The department said that Guangdong had never been listed as a epidemic-stricken area.
According to international public health regulations, only those areas with outbreaks of cholera, yellow fever and the (bubonic) plague were epidemic-stricken areas, the department said.
If Guangdong is delisted, it would be another victory against SARS after the WHO lifted its travel advisory against Hong Kong on May 23.
