WHO to publish GD's anti-SARS experience
Latest Updated by 2003-05-19 10:09:20

Guangdong Province's experience in fighting severe acute respiratory syndrome is precious and papers based on it will be soon published in a noted medical journal, said World Health Organization (WHO) experts Wednesday( May 15)  after a week-long inspection in the province.

WHO epidemiologists Dr. Meirion Evans from Britain and C.K. Lee and Dr. Hume Field from Australia, began their inspection in the south China province on May 6, undertaking the second Guangdong tour of WHO experts since April.

The two inspections differ sharply in that the first was undertaken without any knowledge on the spread of SARS in Guangdong or even in China, while this time SARS cases had been dropping in the province and the anti-SARS situation was becoming more and more optimistic there, said Evans in a local press conference.

According to the SARS situation reported daily in Guangdong, less than 10 cases appeared in several successive days and no new case was reported on Tuesday. The number of cumulative cases here is 1,509 so far, making the province one of the most-seriously affected in China.

The three WHO experts aimed to help medical workers in Guangdong summarize and analyze the data they have collected and to publish the findings, so as to offer anti-SARS experiences for other SARS-stricken nations and regions.

With the help of the experts, local experts in Guangdong have finished two papers and will attempt to publish them in the Scalpel, a respected international medical journal, as soon as possible, said Wang Zhiqiong, vice-director of the provincial bureau of health.

The situation in other areas is still worrying even though effective anti-SARS systems have been established in Guangdong and Beijing, Evans said, adding that some of his WHO colleagues have started inspections in other Chinese provinces, including Hainan, Hebei and Guangxi.
