Experts from the third attached hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou announced their research findings on the SARS antibody Tuesday.
The research team, headed by Professor Li Gang, studied the sequences of blood serum for 21 patients during different periods of their recovery and found that all the 21 people carried the IgG (immunity globulin G) type of antibody. Research experts identify this IgG antibody as the protective antibody that might keep the recovered people from a second SARS infection. To finally identify if IgG antibody is the protective antibody for SARS, two other conditions must be satisfied: the IgG carriers must be free from a second infection of SARS and the IgG carriers' blood serum, if injected into healthy people, will help them avoid contracting SARS. More research will be needed for further results.
