The outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is unlikely to divert Shenzhen people from purchasing products, although it has impacted on a string of industries including tourism, civil aviation, catering and exhibitions.
Figures from the local bureau of statistics show sales in Shenzhen stood at over 25.8 billion yuan (US$3 billion) in the first four months this year, 16 percent up over the corresponding period last year.
Per capita disposable income for households in April this year was 1,937 yuan, up 14.6 percent over last April, a survey by the bureau indicated.
The per capita consumption for local residents was around 1,383 yuan in April, a 3.7 percent increase over last April.
Sales of food, basic living necessities, household appliances and clothing remain stable.
The consumption of telecommunication services and medical products such as masks and disinfectants, has risen dramatically to nearly 30 percent since the outbreak of SARS.
The prices for Western drugs and Chinese medicines dropped slightly by 2 to 3 percent in April.
