Yes, you read that right. You can enjoy mouth-watering seafood cuisine and Taiwanese food, breathtaking sceneries, interesting activities, and special romance all in one festival. All of these can be found at the 2016 Bohe Fishing Festival which is being held at Bohe Port, Maoming from July to August.
Why do people hold a Fishing Festival during this period?
The 18th seasonal fishing moratorium began from May 16 to Aug. 1 in the South China Sea. No fishing is allowed in parts of the sea under China's jurisdiction except by single-layer gill nets or other approved methods, including conventional angling. Fishing bans in the South China Sea began in 1999. Although they have reduced the income of some fishermen, bans protect fisheries and ensure the industry's sustainability. Annual fishing bans began in the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, China's largest body of freshwater, in March.
During the moratorium, fishermen receive training on regulations, new technology and navigational safety, as well as hold fishing festival to promote fisheries culture.
After the moratorium, fishermen would hold a grand fishing season opening ceremony for sailing, which is going to take place on August 1 this year. At that time, Bohe Port will be full of the roaring of machines, the blaring of steam whistles, and the full sailing of vessels. This is the biggest highlight of the festival you don’t want to miss.
