Baitangying Litchi, Chuliang Longan, and Dundilei Banana are three of the most representative fruits from Maoming. In mid-June, these three fruits were listed as China Geographical Indication Products.
Baitangying Litchi, Chuliang Longan, and Dundilei Banana have been cultivated in Maoming since more than 1000 years ago. Considering the protection of property right, Maoming Fruit Bureau registered these three fruits as China Geographical Protection Products in 2004, and therefore obtained the special markings of origin area for the fruits recently.
Why are these three fruits so special? When and where can you eat them? Let’s take a look.
Baitangying Litchi (白糖罂荔枝) is native to Gaozhou and Dianbai in Maoming. It is ripe in late May. It has a history of cultivation for more than 1,300 years. It is early-ripe, easy to grow for mass propagation, and has fresh, sweet, crisp and tasty fruits. It is as good as Guiwei and Gualv which are also first-class varieties of litchi.
Chuliang Longan (储良龙眼) is native to Chuliang Village, Fenjie Town, Gaozhou county-level city, Maoming. It is ripe at the end of July and August. It is a famed rare and valuable variety of longan. Since 1970, it has been rated as the No. 1 longan variety for farmers to grow. It has big fruit, small kernel and thick pulp. It can be eaten freshly as well as made into dried longan which strengthens heart and spleen, nourishes blood to induce tranquilization.
Dundilei Banana (高脚遁地蕾香蕉) is native to Gaozhou, Maoming. It is learned that it has a history of cultivation for over 1,800 years. Dundilei Banana can be harvested all the year round like any other cultivars of banana. It is tall with large and long banana fruits. Early in the 1950s, Dundilei Banana had been exported to the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and other regions at home and abroad.
