Lady Xian, also known as Duchess of the Qiao State, is the most acclaimed and the most legendary female leader, politician and militarist in ancient Lingnan area in China. She had dedicated her life to safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity and national unity, maintaining the stability and peace in Lingnan area, promoting the local development of economy, culture, science, technology and its trade with some ancient Maritime Silk Road countries in southeast Asia. She was thus praised and honored by the imperial court for many times, admired and supported by the people in Lingnan area and given the honorary title of “Saintly Mother of Lingnan”. Former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai called her “the First Heroine of China”.
A record in the Biography of Duchess of the Qiao State of the Biography of Women in the Book of Sui says “......我事三代主，唯用一好心.....” (meaning ‘I have served the emperors of three dynasties with the same good heart’). It is because of the spirit of “唯用一好心” of Lady Xian that the people in Lingnan area and southeast Asia still preserve their belief in her 1,500 years later. 2. Works Solicitation
Solicitation period: The solicitation runs from the date of publication to July 31, 2016
Applicants: Overseas Chinese around the world, English native speaker or foreign friends who speak fluent English, professional and amateur Chinese-English translators, Chinese-English bilingual learners around the world, etc.
How to apply: All applications should be marked with “‘唯用一好心’英文翻译征集” plus the real name, contact number, Email, and address of the applicant.
The translation work can be submitted through one of the following methods:
① Submission on the official website: Get on www.newsgd.com: Enter the webpage for this event: Submit the translation work by following the instructions;
② Submission through email: Send the translation work to one of the following emails: firstname.lastname@example.org OR email@example.com.
③ Submission through the WeChat official account of Newsgd.com: GDToday (ID: Newsguangdong). Send the translation work to said account.

① All the submitted translation works should be originated by the applicants. The submitted works should be healthy and positive and be in compliance with the laws, regulations and social customs of the People’s Republic of China.
② The translation work should express correctly the meaning of the original text-- “唯用一好心”. It should be clear and idiomatic, smooth and fluent, concise and to the point and free of grammatical error.
③ The translation work should highlight the characteristics of the spirit of Lady Xian and the features of the culture of Lady Xian. It should also be catering to the world so that people from different countries and regions and of various cultural backgrounds can understand and accept it.
④ The translation work should be no more than 20 English words (including 20). It should be concise and lucid, catchy and easy to remember, as well as attracting and appealing.
⑤ All the applicants should attach a Chinese-English explanation (about 300 characters in Chinese and 200 words in English) to illustrate the idea and the meaning of the translation work.
3. Evaluation Procedure
① Preliminary Evaluation: From August 1st to August 4th, 2016, the preliminary evaluation and review will be carried out. Translation works that comply with all the requirements will be shortlisted. Thereafter, professionals will select 20 translation works from them to enter the second round of online poll.
② Online Poll: From August 5th to August 19th, 2016, the online poll will be conducted. WeChat users will vote for the translation works on the WeChat official account of GDToday. The voting result will serve as a reference for the event organizer and the evaluation panel. Lucky voters will be selected and receive special gifts.
③ Expert Evaluation: From August 22nd to August 31st, 2016, an evaluation panel made up of experts and scholars will review the shortlisted translation works and select 10 excellent ones from them (including one translation work for the first prize, two for the second prize, three for the third prize and four for excellence award) for the final announcement.
④ Awards Announcement: From September 1st to September 7th, 2016, all the award-winning translation works and the information of the award winners will be published on relevant websites and WeChat official accounts. ① The copyrights of all the translation works shall belong to the solicitation co-organizer and the co-organizer shall have the right to modify the solicited translation works. The supporter has the right to use the solicited translation works.
② The translation works submitted for the solicitation shall be original, shall not have been published before in any form, shall not be public works and shall not infringe on any copyright, trademark right, exclusive right or any other right of a third party. When the translation work is involved in such legal acts as plagiarism, borrowing of others’ ideas and infringement disputes, the author shall be subject to legal liability. The solicitation unit shall not assume any legal responsibility arising therefrom.
③ Please do not send the same translation work for more than one time. In the case that the same translation works are received for more than one time, the first one according to the time order will be selected.
④ Participants are required to submit the translation works through one of the aforementioned official methods. No fee is charged for any participation of this solicitation. In case any unit or person charges any participant in the name of this solicitation, the organizer reserves the right to pursue legal responsibility.
⑤ If there is any discrepancy between the Chinese and English versions, the Chinese version shall prevail. The event co-organizer reserves the right of final interpretation.
As early as over 1,500 years ago in the Liang, Chen and Sui dynasties, Lingnan area had already established trade contacts with nations in Southeast Asia through Maritime Silk Road. This was about 700 years earlier than Venetian merchant traveler Marco Polo’s visits to China through the Silk Road in the Yuan dynasty and over 800 years earlier than famed Chinese explorer Zheng He’s expeditionary voyages to Southeast Asia in the Ming dynasty.
This person led the local people to promote production technology, agriculture, handicraft and boost the economic development, and quelled the civil disturbances and suppressed the rebellions in the Lingnan area to keep the peace for the common people. In addition, this somebody also recaptured Hainan Island after being away from the central government for nearly six hundred years.
This certain person was none other than Lady Xian, the most acclaimed and the most legendary politician and militarist in ancient Lingnan area in China. Lady Xian, also known as Duchess of the Qiao State, was a heroine that lived through the Liang dynasty (502-560), the Chen dynasty (557-589) and the Sui dynasty (581-618).
Born in 5th century, Lady Xian was a native in Gaoliang (currently Maoming city in Guangdong Province). Lady Xian was a member of ethnic Li. Her family was hereditary leader of their tribe.
During her life, Lady Xian strove to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and national unity, maintain the stability and peace in Lingnan area, promote the local development of economy, culture, science, technology and its trade with some ancient Maritime Silk Road countries in southeast Asia. She had made eminent contributions and was thus praised and honored by the imperial court for many times, admired and supported by the people in Lingnan area and given the honorary title of “Saintly Mother of Lingnan”. Former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai called her “the First Heroine of China” and former Chinese President Jiang Zemin praised her as “the role model that the later generations should learn from forever”.
For more than 1,500 years, people in the Lingnan area have been commemorating Lady Xian in various ways, worshiping her in temples, holding festivals in memory of her contribution. At the moment, there are about 2,500 temples of Lady Xian across the world, spanning Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and the western Guangdong Province. She is a heroine worshiped not only by local Chinese but also overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia.
After more than 1,500 years, from a real heroine in ancient China, Lady Xian has become a deity worshiped by people in Lingnan area in China as well as in many countries in Southeast Asia. The change carries people’s yearning for peace and stability, for well-being life and good health, and for friendly relationship with the world.
