Maoming, the hometown of Lady Xian, boasts rich resources of the culture of Lady Xian and has witnessed Lady Xian’s contribution to the country and the people. In Maoming, a great number of people worship Lady Xian, which is the reflection of the people’s good wish for happy life, longing for peace and desire for friendship with the world.

There are all kinds of activities and celebrations in honor of Lady Xian in Maoming. These events receive extensive attention from the common people and the government. Each year, the celebration of Lady Xian’s birthday and the Nian Li festival are the grandest and most influential.

Lady Xian’s birthday is the 24th of the 11th Chinese lunar year. This year the celebration of her birthday falls on December 22. On that day, people from home and abroad will go to the Temples of Lady Xian and especially the Hometown of Lady Xian in Maoming to hold ceremonies there.

Nian Li is the most ceremonious and distinctive festival to commemorate Lady Xian in Maoming. Nian means a year in Chinese, while Li means a routine. The combination of these two words means a routine of a year. It is in memory of Lady Xian’s yearly trip around Lingnan to get to know the conditions of the people.

Temple is one of the main venues for the practice of honoring Lady Xian. There are temples of Lady Xian all around the city of Maoming. It’s known that there are more than 2,500 temples of Lady Xian around the globe, and one in eight of them are located in Maoming.

Maoming is home to major historical and cultural sites protected at the national and provincial level. That includes the Mausoleum of Duchess of the Qiao State, the Cultural Tourism Scenic Spot of Lady Xian’s Former Residence as well as the Goddess Temple (or Temple of Lady Xian) where Lady Xian was enshrined and worshiped.

There are also relics of the former residence of Lady Xian, Goddess Well, Temple of Madam Xian in Gaozhou, Temple of Lady of Chengjing in Dianbai, etc. Among all the temples, Temple of Madam Xian in Gaozhou is the largest and the most influential.

In July 2002, the Mausoleum of Duchess of the Qiao State and the Goddess Temple were listed as provincial-level key cultural relics protection units. In 2006, the Cultural Tourism Scenic Spot of Lady Xian’s Former Residence was approved as National Education Base for National Unity and Progress. In March 2013, the Mausoleum of Duchess of the Qiao State was approved as one of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units, which was the first one in Maoming. Now, Maoming is carrying out the preparation work of listing the Cultural Tourism Scenic Spot of Lady Xian’s Former Residence as Guangdong’s Patriotism Education Base.
