Editorials in Hong Kong newspapers see the interpretation of the Basic Law approved by China's National People's Congress as a positive step for Hong Kong.

The ruling says the tenure of Hong Kong's next chief executive should be the remaining part left by the former chief executive, settling a dispute on this matter. It also lays the legal foundations for the election of the new chief executive on July 10.

An editorial in the Commercial Daily points out that the NPC Standing Committee's interpretation is legitimate according to China's Constitution and Hong Kong's Basic Law. It also sees it as an improvement to the Basic Law.

In Wen Wei Po, the editorial says that this interpretation is an authoritative explanation of the chief executive's tenure.

It will help correctly implement the Basic Law and ensure the timely election of the new chief executive.
