Latest Updated by 2005-10-13 14:46:29

International charity ORBIS's Pin Day Appeal has raised over 2.4 million HK dollars (about 309, 000 US dollars) in Hong Kong, announced ORBIS on Wednesday.

The Pin Day Appeal is a fund raising activity held by ORBIS to respond to the World Sight Day on Oct. 13. An award giving ceremony was held on Wednesday to honor outstanding fund raisers in the activity.

According to Director for ORBIS Hong Kong Paul Forrest, this is the second year they held the Appeal and there were 177 corporations with altogether almost 27,000 people joining the activity.

A total of more than 2.4 million HK dollars has been raised in support of ORBIS's sight saving initiatives in Asia and around the world, said he.

Apart from raising funds, ORBIS is also providing free medical consultation and treatment to eye disease patients in remote areas of Chinese Mainland, Ethiopia and Bengal to respond to World SightDay.

ORBIS is an international organization whose mission is to preserve and restore sight. In 1982, its first Flying Eye Hospital took to the skies and has given treatment to over 1.3 million patients of more than 80 countries.
