Hong Kong Acting Chief Executive Donald Tsang said at the Legislature Council (LegCo) Thursday afternoon that the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government should strengthen cooperation with the LegCo and work together for the welfare of the Hong Kong people.

It is the first time for Tsang to attend the question-and-answer session of the LegCo as Acting Chief Executive.

Tsang said over the past years, the SAR government and all sectors of Hong Kong have found a set of political guidelines beneficial to Hong Kong's stability and development. The present economy continues to revive, the society maintains harmonious and the people are both confident in themselves and the future of the Hong Kong.

He hoped that the Executive Council (ExCo) and the LegCo could strengthen communication and build mutual trust.

Asked about the challenges and opportunities confronted with Hong Kong, Tsang said Hong Kong's development must benefit the overall situation of the country. Hong Kong should transform its economy to meet the challenges of globalization. By playing a key role in the economy of Pearl Delta and Pan-Peal Delta regions, Hong Kong should consolidate its status as an international financial center and an Asia's World city.

Hong Kong people need a more open and more democratic society that all six million residents enjoy respect, Tsang said. Therefore, the government must keep reflecting on itself and strive for progress to live up to the expectation of the people.

He said he and his colleagues would enhance capabilities in policy research formulation, coordination and implementation, and let more people take part in public affairs.

"With an attitude of openness and sincerity, we will try to secure trust and support for the government," Tsang said.

He added that the immediate task for the government is to electthe new Chief Executive on July 10, on time and legally.

He said the present situation for Hong Kong is hard-won and should be cherished.
