The SARS epidemic which broke out last spring put the medical care system of Guangzhou under an ordeal. However, it also served to let the world witness the powerful first-aid capability and high-quality medical staff of the city. Even at the peak of SARS, the city still managed to make a success of the 2003 Spring China Export Commodities Trade Fair and none of the visitors was infected.
In Guangzhou, there are now 2,265 medical institutions, including 196 hospitals and 63 preventive health care organizations.
On average, every 1,000 residents have access to 5.33 sickbeds, 7.87 medical workers and 3.09 medical practitioners.
Therefore, we are proud to say, if the 2010 Asian Games is held in Guangzhou, the city will definitely be able to provide efficient and professional medical service to ensure the smooth ongoing of the event.
