Zhongxing Telecom, a Shenzhen-based telecom manufacturer and network solution provider, was awarded 2 million yuan (240,000 US dollars) by the provincial government at a working conference on intellectual property rights, the Southern Metropolitan News reported Sunday (May 16).

The enterprise won the top prize worth of one million yuan (US$120,000) and two awards for "outstanding performance" each worth of 500,000 yuan thanks to its contribution in proprietary technologies research and development, the report said.

Another 4 million yuan bonus was distributed among eight other winners including the Guangzhou-based South China University of Technology.

The prizes, designed to encourage the promotion of research and development in proprietary rights, are awarded every two years, and are included in the province's budget.

The provincial bureau of intellectual property rights has stipulated that more than 30 percent of the bonus should be given to the inventor, and more than 20 percent to contributing teams and individuals. The rest should be dedicated for future development of proprietary technologies.

Authorities also commended 9 individuals and 40 local enterprises for their contributions to intellectual property.

Huawei Technologies, another Shenzhen-based telecom corporation, was awarded the title of "outstanding private enterprise in intellectual property rights."
