"Plain Sailing" Arcade in front of the South Sea God Temple

The South Sea God Temple, China's only standing temple worshipping the Sea God, is a major historic site on the Maritime Silk Route. As the final stop of the Gotheborg's visit to Guangzhou, the temple has undergone a massive renovation, with a newly zoned waterfront area and square, expanded water surface and car park, and additional water space and docks, as well as a newly built 10,000-square meter square in front of the temple and a 80,000-square meter man-made lake.

The entire renovation project was completed on July 10 as planned. The temple will be incorporated into the "Pearl River Night Cruise".

Temple administrator Huang Yingfeng explained that following more than seven months of archeological survey, a number of ruins and artifacts have been uncovered, including the Qing-dynasty pier, which is located south of the "Plain Sailing" arcade and contains a flight of nine steps leading down to the water and a five-slab stone roadway extending from the temple to the pier where pilgrimage boats were docked.

The South Sea God Temple will receive Swedish guests on July 18 and August 18 and 19.

The Swedish Royal Couple will pay a brief visit to the South Sea God Temple on July 18 where they will watch the sea tribute ceremony and folklore performances by performers in 10 formations.

For a month from July 18, the South Sea God Temple will present three exhibitions to the public - an exhibition of artifacts unearthed from the temple in previous and recent archeological explorations, an exhibition of Guangzhou-style colored porcelain, and an exhibition of architectural stone carving and pottery.
