Tang Hao, Deputy Chief Secretary of Guangdong Provincial Government, Zhu Yaozhong, Deputy Director of Guangdong Development and Reform Commission and Li Shoujin, Deputy Head of the Publicity Department of Guangdong Province, present the press conference.

The International Consultative Conference on the Future Economic Development of Guangdong Province (GDICC) 2005 plenary is themed 'Today and Tomorrow: Guangdong's Sustainable Development' and will be held from Dec.17 to 18 in Guangzhou.

On the press conference for GDICC 2005 plenary today (Oct 11th), Mr. Tang Hao, deputy chief secretary of Guangdong Provincial Government, said the governor's advisors are chairmen, presidents, CEOs or main decision-makers of famous multinational companies or institutes. This year, 16 advisors will attend by themselves to the event and nine advisors will send their observers.

The two-day event will include a closed-door conference, an enterprise forum focusing on "the entrepreneurs' social responsibility", press conferences by Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua and his advisors and the advisors' institutes, seminars and advisors' lectures in high schools.

A new activity this year is the "Governor Advisor's Cup" Golf Match, which will be held before the plenary. Besides, there will be a concert during the plenary.

Tang said, the closed-door conference this year will be divided into three parts, with three different topics:

  • Industrially Sustainable Development: Technological Innovation and Industrial Upgrade in Guangdong.
  • Ecologically Sustainable Development: Cyclic Economy and Green Guangdong Program.
  • Socially Sustainable Development: Education Development and Human Resource Exploitation.

Guangdong seeking approaches to maintain sustainable development

Since China initiated the reform and opening up policy, Guangdong has achieve great social and economic development, and its GDP has been increasing at an average annual rate of 14 per cent.  In the year 2004, Guangdong accounted for 1/9 of China's GDP, 1/7 of its total fiscal revenue, 1/3 of its exportation and 1/4 of its foreign direct investment. The infrastructure was improved and local citizens are living a better life. In 2004, the urban per capita disposable income of the province was 13627.65 RMB and the per capita income of its farmers was 4365.9 RMB, which were 40% and 50 % higher than the nation's average respectively.

However, Guangdong is now facing three bottlenecks for further development. These include shortage of resource, technology innovation and talents. It is expected that the advisors will contribute professional insights and feasible measures to Guangdong's sustainable development programme in their 'advisors' reports' and in the coming meetings.
