Biography
As President of Nokia Corporation, Pekka Ala-Pietila has a broad range of responsibilities that cover sales and marketing as well as manufacturing, logistics and sourcing.
In 1998 he was named Executive Vice President of the Nokia Group and Deputy to Jorma Ollila, President and Chief Executive Officer. He was appointed to his present position on January 1st 2004.
Previous to this, Pekka's responsibilities included identifying strategic new business ideas and long-term growth opportunities and, as head of Nokia Ventures Organization, his role also extended to spearheading the development and innovative surveying of new businesses.
Pekka joined Nokia in 1984 and held a variety of positions in Nokia Data before moving to Nokia Mobile Phones in 1988. In 1990 he was promoted to Vice President, Strategic Planning, Nokia Mobile Phones, and took the helm as President, Nokia Mobile Phones, two years later. In 1999 he was named as President, Nokia Corporation. He has been a member of the Group Executive Board of Nokia since 1992.
Pekka serves on the boards of SAP AG and Pictet & Cie Banquiers as well as organizations including the Finnish-American Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Information Bureau, the Foundation for Pediatric Research and the Science and Technology Policy Council of Finland. He is an honorary member of the Finnish Association of Designers (Ornamo), and a Knight, 1st Class, of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.
He holds a master's degree in economics from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration. Dedicated to life-long learning, Pekka was awarded a doctorate degree in technology from the University of Tampere, Finland, in 1995, and a doctorate degree in economics and business administration from the Helsinki School of Economics in 2001.
Pekka was born on January 13, 1957, in Asikkala, Finland. He is married and has three children. In his spare time, Pekka is an enthusiastic sportsman and enjoys hikes in the Finnish countryside.
