Guangdong officials launched its Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office in Guangzhou in March, thus enhancing cooperation between the province and the neighbouring two special administrative regions (SARs).
The office is dedicated to administrative work related to Guangdong's cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao, organization and preparatory work of the Guangdong-Hong Kong and Guangdong-Macao cooperation joint conferences and developing cooperation in trading, technology, education, culture and sanitation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
The cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao showed remarkable growth under the Mainland-Hong Kong and Mainland-Macao Closer Economic Part-nership Agreement (CEPA) framework and the Pan Pearl River Delta regional cooperation, which was launched in 2003. In 2005, trade between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao was about 300 billion USD. By the end of last year, investment of the two SARs in Guangdong amounted to 100 billion USD. In addition, 82,000 companies with Hong Kong and Macao capital were registered in Guangdong.
