Because of its industrialization and urbanization processes, Guangzhou is experiencing a sharp decrease of wetland area. Its rice planting area dropped by half in the past 53 years. This worsens the urban heat island effect on this south China metropolitan.

To better its wetland protection and established a related mechanism, Guangzhou will launch a wetland resource research in the city and design a protection plan.

Data shows, Guangzhou currently has 74.37 ha. of wetland, accounting for 10% of its total area.
