>>>Click into: 85th Birthday of CPC The Communist Party of China expelled 44,738 Party members last year, said Ouyang Song, deputy head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, at a press conference on Thursday.
According to the Party Constitution and other relevant regulations, Party members who fail to meet the Party requirements after repeated education are expelled, he said. The requirements include following Communist Party ideology and paying a party fee into a fund which can be accessed by all the Party members.
An 18-month education campaign for Party members ended last month in which a series of education activities were organized to assist Party members who fail to fulfill their obligations.
Members were urged to study the Party's constitution, constructively criticise themselves and other members and improve their knowledge on the ideology and the workings of the CPC.
This was the Party's largest ever campaign involving nearly 70 million Party members in over 3.5 million grassroots Party organizations. Statistics from the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee show that China now has 70.8 million Party members.
Up to 2.47 million people have joined the Party every year since the 16th CPC National Congress in 2002.
In 2005, over 17 million people applied for Party membership and 2.47 million of them were approved. Nearly two million of the new members were under 35 years old, accounting for 80.1 percent of the total.
Ouyang said the CPC has always paid great attention to fighting corruption and requires its committees at all levels to discipline those guilty of corruption.
"China's anti-corruption drive has made some achievements during recent years, as the CPC treats corruption by looking into its root cause," he said.
He also said Liu Zhihua, former vice mayor of Beijing, who was removed from his post for corruption on June 11, is currently under investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC and the Ministry of Supervision.
