The smiling Gao, who defended Olympic mixed doubles title with Zhang Jun, felt confident when facing their compatriots, whom they lead 7-4 in previous encounters, by winning the first set 15-7 with ease.

However, Gao/Huang met great challenge from Zhang/Yang, whose powerful strikes penetrated their strong defense, losing the second set 15-4.

In the third set, Gao/Huang didn't give up their resistance after lagging behind 10-4, but at last, exhausted Gao/Huang lost the final set 15-8, and handed the gold medal to Zhang/Yang.

"It's really exciting to win the championship at my first Olympic Games," said Zhang Jiewen from Guangdong province.

"I feel extremely happy to clinch the gold," said Yang Wei, extending her thanks to her partner Zhang for her excellent performance today.

Twice mixed doubles champion Gao said she was exhausted during the game, as she took part in two disciplines in this Olympic Games.
