Standardized planting pattern ensures food source safety

Lei Xiaoling, a professor from Guangdong Ocean University, suggests standardized planting pattern in rural areas to ensure the source safety of food production. It’s the third time that Lei has put the food safety issue on the discussing table of the National People’s Congress.

Lei said that food processing procedures have improved significantly compared with several years ago, while source pollution remains a concern, which will have great impact on food safety.

She did much research and field study to explore the feasibility of promoting standardized planting patterns in rural areas. “Nowadays pesticide residues of many agricultural products exceed the maximum safety level, which is due to scattered planting,” Lei Xiaoling said, “we want to eliminate the products of poor quality, standardized planting is a good solution.” She said that the agricultural guidance should be specified further and promotion should be strengthened in rural areas to reach the goal.

Lei Xiaoling will also raise proposals about the seawall construction in Guangdong province, promoting the “sunshine kitchen” model nationwide, and increasing subsidies for the elderly people over 90 years old.

Increase financial support for underdeveloped areas

Liu Xiaoquan has spent almost the whole year in 2014 to investigate and survey for the four proposals she will put forward at the annual legislative session, including supporting the renovation work of village roads in underdeveloped areas, strengthening campus safety legislation, supporting seawall construction in underdeveloped areas, and promoting the two-child policy on a broader scope.

When talking about village road renovation, Liu said that lack of funds had constrained the contruction work. For example, although the Zhanjiang Municipal government had offered a consider subsidy at 180,000 yuan ($ 28,700) per kilometer, it was far from enough given the construction of each kilometer of village road need 340,000 yuan ($54,400), Liu Xiaoquan said.

Liu will propose more financial support from the central government to village road construction in rural areas.

“As an NPC deputy, I will put forward the issues that the grassroots people most care about to the congress, and strive for more support for the underdeveloped areas’ development from the central government,” Liu said.
