Situated in the southeast of Guangdong and in the north of Pearl River Delta, Huizhou Municipality, part of Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, is 130 kilometers away from Guangzhou northwestward and only 70 kilometers from Hong Kong and Shenzhen southward. Covering a land area of 11,200 square kilometers and a maritime area of 4,520 square kilometers, Huizhou administers Huicheng District, Huiyang District, Huidong County and Longmen County plus Dayawan Economic & Technological Development Zone and Zhongkai Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, and two national-level development zones.

Historically regarded as "Gateway of Eastern Guangdong" and "Famous Place in Lingnan", Huizhou, a well-noted cultural and historical city in Guangdong, has been the political, economic, cultural and transportation center in Dongjiang River Basin since the Sui Dynasty (581-618). Over 480 famous Chinese historical figures had resided or visited Huizhou in the years staring from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to its modern history. Su Shi, a great litterateur in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), used to live in Huizhou for a total of three years. Dr. Sun Yat-sen also stayed in Huizhou to command his revolutionary activities during the Xinhai Revolution (1911). Zhou En-lai was also here to command the National Revolutionary Army to fight in the Eastern March during the period of the First Cooperation between the Communist Party of China and Kuomintang (1924-1927). Huizhou is also home to many democratic fighters and revolutionists such as Liao Zhongkai, Deng Yanda, Ye Ting, among others.

Characterized with a high degree of industrial specialization and socialization, Huizhou has formed a relatively complete industrial structure consisting of electronics, petrochemical, electric power generation, building material, auto part, mechanical, textile and other industry after years of development. The output value of electronic information industry in Huizhou ranks the third place in the province while its petrochemical industry is also catching up rapidly. As one of the investment destinations in China, 38 of World Top 500 Enterprises have made their investment in Huizhou with a total of 4,200 foreign-invested enterprises. An all-round and multi-level transport network, including road, railway, inland river, port and aviation, is in place in Huizhou. With Huizhou-Yantian Expressway, Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway, Guangzhou-Huizhou Expressway and Huizhou-Heyuan Expressway running right through the municipality, Huizhou has a total mileage of 10,436 kilometers of roadway, equal to a mileage of 94 kilometers per 100 square kilometers. Dongguan's history can be traced back 1,700 years ago when its earliest county was founded during the Jin Dynasty (265-420). Dongguan is regarded as the starting point of China's modern history. It is in Dongguan's Humen Town where Lin Zexu led brave soldiers and civilians to fight against British troops and burned opium about 150 years ago. Dongguan was administered by Dongjiang Prefecture after the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949. It was further switched to be administered by Yuezhong and Huiyang Prefecture in 1952 and 1956 respectively. Dongguan was included in the Pearl River Delta Economic Development Zone in 1985 under the approval of the State Council. The county-level Dongguan Municipality was established in September 1985 and was further promoted to prefecture-level in November 1988 directly administered by the province.

Dongguan ranks the fourth regarding GDP, gross output value of above-designated-size industry, fixed asset investment and gross retail sales of consumer goods among all the prefecture-level or above municipalities of Guangdong. Dongguan achieved US$47.376 billion in export out of its US$ 84.421 billion total foreign trade, up 15.8% from the previous year and ranked the fourth nationwide and second provincially. As a worldwide renowned manufacturing base, Dongguan is highly developed in manufacturing industry which accounts for 90 percent of the gross output value of its above-designated-size industries. As of 2006, Dongguan has attracted foreign investors from over 30 countries and regions all over the world and achieved a total of over US$ 30 billion accumulated actual foreign investment.

A multiform transport network including road, railway, inland river and seaway is in place in Dongguan along with modern telecommunication and electricity network. Situated on the eastern bank of the Pearl River Estuary, Humen Town covers an area of 178.5 square kilometers. Dongguan School for Taiwan Businessmen's Children
Dongguan School for Taiwan Businessmen's Children was ceremoniously inaugurated on September 2, 2000. It is the first school in mainland China for the children of Taiwan businessmen authorized by relevant government departments and donated by Taiwan businessmen who have investment in mainland. Situated in Huangchong Village of Dongguan's Zhongtang Town, the school was built in November 1999. Petrochemicals Complex by CNOOC and Shell Petrochemicals Company Limited (CSPC)

The Petrochemicals Complex by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and Shell Petrochemicals Company Limited (CSPC) is the largest joint-venture project in China to date and one of the biggest petrochemical projects worldwide. With a total investment of US$4.3 billion, the project was initiated in November 2002 and put into operation on February 10, 2006. CSPC is a project jointly invested by Shell Nanhai B.V., a member of the Royal Dutch Shell, with a 50 percent stake, and CNOOC Petrochemicals Investment Company Limited (CPIL), with the other 50 percent stake. Its annual production output includes 800,000-ton ethylene, 320,000-ton glycol, 450,000 ton polyethylene and 240,000-ton polypropylene.

Huidong Gangkou Sea Turtle Natural Reserve

Situated in the juncture Gangkou Town, Huidong County, and at the foot of Daxing Mountain in the southernmost part of Nianping Peninsula, Gangkou Sea Turtle Natural Reserve is the only natural reserve of this kind in China. Established in 1985 under the approval of Guangdong Provincial Government, the reserve covers an area of 4 square kilometers. Surrounded by mountains and sea, it covers an area of only 0.1 square kilometers sandy shore with a tranquil environment. With sandy and slightly reefy nearshore seabed, the limpid seawater is 5 to 15 meters deep. With seawater temperature at 28 degrees centigrade in summer and autumn seasons and the slightly sloped beach composed of tiny grains of sand, it is a real paradise for sea turtles. Sea turtles return here to breed their spawn regularly every year. Regarded as the "ast delivery bed" for sea turtles in mainland China, it is an important base for their research and protection. The establishment of this natural preserve is aimed to educate the people to realize the impact of protecting ecological balance for the sustainable development of human beings.

A total of US$581 million foreign trade was accomplished, up 47.3 percent from 2005.
Located in the eastern part of Daya Bay ETEZ, the Daya Bay Petrochemical Industrial Park has a total planned area of 27.8 square kilometers. With refinery and polyethene project as backbone, Daya Bay Petrochemical Industrial Park prioritizes the development of industries with high added value and sci-tech content such as deep processing petrochemicals, hi-tech material, special and fine chemicals, among others. There are a total of 15 completed and unfinished petrochemical projects worth 73 billion yuan investment to date. Dozens of worldwide leading petrochemical enterprises from Europe and America as well as Japan and South Korea are planning their investment for downstream petrochemical project in the park. With a total of over 20,000 manufacturing enterprises covering over 30 sectors and making 60,000 types of products, Dongguan boasts its manufacturing industrial system characterized with complete industrial coverage, well-positioned infrastructure and advanced technology. With the 8 pillar manufacturing industries including electronic information, electronic mechanic, textile & garment, home furnishings, toys, papermaking & paper products, food & beverage, and chemical products playing a significant role, the overall economic capacity in Dongguan has been greatly expanded. 1. Southern Style Fashion Town
Based on introduction and absorption, Humen Town Government took the opportunity to prioritize the development of apparel industry in the middle of the 1980s. With the guidance and support from the township government, apparel industry and market in Humen had been matured over the years. Humen has been awarde by the China National Textile and Apparel Council as the "Famous Town for Women Apparel".
Dongguan's apparel industry is mainly concentrated in Humen Town. With a total of more than 2,000 apparel enterprises registered in Township Administration for Industry and Commerce, annual apparel output in Humen can reach 200 million pieces worth 13.5 billion yuan of sales. Annual export is expected to be US$ 400 million pursuant to incomplete statistics. Big names in China's apparel industry such as Yishion, Pine & Eagle, GreyMice, etc. are all based in Humen.

2. Oriental Capital of Home Furnishings
As Hong Kong and Taiwan experienced economic transformation at the beginning of the 1990s, many home furnishers moved their operations to Dongguan. Their arrival was accompanied with huge capital flow, advanced productive technology, trendy product design, up-to-date market information and completely new ideas for modern home furnishings and marketing along with local and global leading big names in furnishings field, which has enabled the rapid development for home furnishings industry in Dongguan.
Dongguan's Houjie Town has developed into an important town for furnishings with a total of over 400 large furnishings makers in the past two decades. 3. Famous Chinese Town of Woolen Knitwear
With a total of over 2,000 woolen knitwear enterprises, the annual output for woolen sweater in Dongguan's Dalang Town surpasses 300 million pieces, 60 percent of them are exported to foreign markets. A complete industrial chain composed of production, accessories, machinery, printing, R&D, logistics and trading is in place in Dalang. It has been awarded as "Famous Chinese Town of Woolen Knitwear". The annual China (Dalang) International Woolen Knitwear Fair is a big name in the industry.
