No epidemic, public health incidents in quake zone
Latest Updated at 2008-May-19 09:07:34

China's Ministry of Health on Sunday said no disease outbreaks or emergency public health incidents had been reported by midnight on Saturday in areas affected by the deadly earthquake which struck southwest China's Sichuan Province on May 12.

A total of 5,850 medical staff and 550 ambulances were dispatched by the ministry, and had reached all affected townships in the quake zone.

The ministry also sent 646 doctors and assistants to quake areas to help prevent disease. A total of 350 tons of disease prevention goods were en route to the quake zone, along with 300 tons of disinfectants and 100,000 filter masks.

More than 36,000 medical personnel are working in Sichuan, according to the ministry. A total of 122,252 people injured during the quakes have been hospitalized.

The ministry also set up two field hospitals with 400 beds in isolated quake zones with the help of military helicopters.

The 7.8-magnitude quake centered in Sichuan has claimed 28,881 lives by Saturday. The country's State Council, or the Cabinet, estimated that total death toll could top 50,000.
