20 Guangzhou volunteers set forth to Sichuan disaster areas

At noon on May 15, Guangzhou's first group of 20 young volunteers officially set forth to Dujiangyan to volunteer their services for the earthquake relief effort. After voluntary applications by the youth from all walks of life, preliminary selection, organization verification and brief training sessions were held and the volunteers departed.

Learning that the disaster areas need numbers of professional volunteers for disaster relief, the youth in Guangzhou responded vigorously to the city鈥檚 voluntary disaster relief proposal entitled 鈥淕uangzhou Supports Sichuan, hand-in-hand鈥. The effort, sponsored by the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of Communist Youth League, also received volunteer offers from numerous professionals from the circles of medical services, nursing, first aid, detection, psychology, and others who phoned zealously offering their services for during the three days from May 13 to 15.

She Zhiling, Vice Secretary of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League, said that the selection criteria for these volunteers were very strict and all have to be strong in their ideological and political work backgrounds, proficient in their specific specialties, and in excellent in health. All applicants said they did not mind the recruitment requirements acknowledged that 鈥渢he volunteers will pay all their own expenses during their volunteer work periods鈥. To avoid bringing any additional work and unnecessary troubles to the earthquake relief efforts, these 20 volunteers will provide their accommodations and catering for themselves upon arriving in the earthquake areas.
