The 1,000-year-old Huangyao ancient town is located in the northeast part of Guangxi. Founded in the early Song Dynasty (960-1234), Huangyao flourished during the Qianlong period (1735-1796) of the Qing Dynasty, when thousands of traders and merchants made their living there. The ancient town takes its name from the Huang and the Yao families, two prominent local clans.

Surrounded by verdant countryside offering picturesque views of karst peaks, this charming town has served as the setting for a number of period dramas and films, including the 2006 Hollywood movie The Painted Veil. Travelers can visit local landmarks including bridges, pavilions, temples and ancestral halls built in the classic architectural styles of the Ming and Qing.
