President of the University of Ferrara
  After graduating from the University of Bologna with Romano Prodi and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, and a rapid academic career in various Universities, returned to Bologna in 1990 as full professor of European Economics and Policy.      In 1996 he moved to the ancient University of Ferrara to found the Faculty of Economics, of Public Administration and International Institutions. He was appointed the chancellor of the University of Ferrara in November 2004.      His varied career has included being a member of several advisory committees, editorial boards (editor of LIndustria, the Italian Journal of Industrial Economics; member of the board of Policy Studies, Review of International Political Economy, Review of Industry and Innovation, Revue de Economie Industrielle) and scientific committees (among them Nomisma, the think-tank on industrial policy, and the European Institute for Prospective Technologies Studies, Seville).      He founded with Roger Sugden and Keith Cowling the European Network on Industrial Policy Studies-EUNIP, which is today joining more than 150 members in Europe, in 1997 with the University of Ferrara, Birmingham and winsconsin founded the Institute of Industrial Development Policy Studies, managing a school of industrial development policy studies in Ferrara, Millwaukee and Managua.      At the academic activity, he added an intense work as advisors of international institutions and of the Italian government. He has been member of the board of Directors of IRI-the Italian state holding in charge of privatization (1997-2000) and President of Sviluppo Italia, the Italian Development Agency (1999-2000).      He acted as advisor of the Italian Institutions (Prime Minister Office, Minister of Industry Cabinet, Regional Government of Emilia Romagna), and international institutions from EU, to BID and UNIDO mainly on issue connected with the development of industrial organization, small and medium sized companies).      He wrote 17 books and 200 articles on industrial policy and development of small firms, among them "Innovacion y territorio-Politicas para PyMEs", Editorial JUS, Ciudad de Mexico, 1999, in castellano, "Politiche industriali dell" Unione Europea" II Mulino, Bologna, 1999 "Industrial Policies and economic Integration. Learning from the European Experiences, Routledge, London, 1998 "Costruir el mercado Lecciones de la Union Europea; el desarollo de la instituciones y las politicas de compettitividad".
The University of Ferrara
Founded in 1391 by Marquis Alberto V DEste with the permission of Pope Boniface IX, the University of Ferrara was one of the oldest universities in Italy. It was located in Ferrara, the university town, where is renowned for its hospitality, beautiful surroundings and the glories of Medieval and Renaissance cultures.
The university consists of 8 faculties, 20 and more departments and institutes. With an increase of applicants year by year, the university enjoys a high reputation among the students. At present, it has a registered enrollment of 20,000.
It offers BA programmes covering 78 disciplines, as well as a variety of curriculums for M.A. degrees, Ph.D degrees and professional trainings. Some of the courses are given in the places outside Ferrara, such as Rovigo, Cento, Argenta, Comacchio, Pieve di Cento, Faenza, Bolzano, etc. The research programmes in the university have seen a prosperous development and achieved remarkable results in the key fields of applied science. In recent years, patents conferred to the universitys researchers keep soaring, many of which were utilized in production.
The university boasts a favorable academic environment and the most rational ratio between the amount of students and teachers. In addition, it organizes miscellaneous extracurricular activities in collaboration with various social institutes. Students are able to benefit from the financial assistance policies, including reduction of tuition fees, part-time jobs employment, as well as allowances and scholarships provided by the exchange programs with universities inside and outside Europe. They could also have free access to laboratories and computers on the campus.
