GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is a world leading research-based pharmaceutical company with a powerful combination of skills and resources that provides a platform for delivering strong growth in today's rapidly changing healthcare environment.

GSK's mission is to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

Headquartered in the UK and with operations based in the US, the new company is one of the industry leaders, with an estimated seven per cent of the world's pharmaceutical market.

GSK also has leadership in four major therapeutic areas - anti-infections, central nervous system (CNS), respiratory and gastro-intestinal/metabolic.  In addition, it is a leader in the important area of vaccines and has a growing portfolio of oncology products.

The company also has a Consumer Healthcare portfolio comprising over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, oral care products and nutritional healthcare drinks, all of which are among the market leaders.

Based on 2001 Annual Results, GSK had sales of £20.5 billion ($29.5 billion) and profit before tax of £6.2 billion ($8.8 billion).  Pharmaceutical sales accounted for £17.2 billion ($24.8 billion) with new products representing 22% of total pharmaceutical sales.

GSK has over 100,000 employees worldwide.  Of these, over 40,000 are in sales and marketing, the largest sales force in the industry.  Over 42,000 employees work at 99 manufacturing sites in 39 countries and over 16,000 are in R&D.

GSK R&D is based at 24 sites in seven countries.  The company has a leading position in genomics/genetics and new drug discovery technologies.  The GSK R&D budget is about £2.4bn/$4bn.  In Guangdong, there is an R&D exchange programme with Zhongshan Medical University; there is also collaboration between the South China Institute of Botany and the Center for Natural Product Research of Singapore, an organization funded by GlaxoSmithKline.

GSK is committed to being a good corporate citizen and takes seriously its social responsibility to invest in the communities in which its employees live and work throughout the world.  Community Partnership activities encompass support for healthcare, education, scientific and medical research, and arts projects around the world - not only with cash donations but also with product donations and employee involvement.  The company is also involved in a number of major global initiatives to combat health problems in the developing world: GSK cooperates with UNAIDS and UNICEF in multi-country programmes that facilitate access to treatment for HIV/AIDS and for preventing maternal transmission of HIV to newborn babies.  The company was the first to offer preferential prices on its antiretroviral drugs in developing countries, to enable more patients to benefit from effective treatment.  The company makes vaccines available at discounted prices to governments, charities and agencies such as UNICEF and the WHO, which can commit to purchasing large quantities for use in the worldwide programme for immunization of children.

The company opened its first office in China during the Qing Dynasty, in 1908.  Regular business was conducted through the Guangzhou Commodities Fair during the 1970s.  Our first office in Guangzhou was opened in 1991.

In China, we have 2,600 employees including HONGKONG SAR.  Currently Rx team is the biggest one which includes 800 staffs and 610 of them are field sales representatives who are responsible for 4 products lines: Antibiotics, Respiratory, Heptodin/Avandia and Speciality.
116 staffs are employed in Guangdong, 90% of whom are graduates with many having post-graduate qualifications.
