History and Presence in China

As one of the FORTUNE 500 companies, ALSTOM has been playing a role in China's development for almost 50 years based on the experience and expertise it has built up over the past century.

• 1950's Began supplying China with electric and diesel electric locomotives.
• 1979 First representative office set up in Beijing, making it one of the earliest international companies to enter China in the wake of the country's opening.
• 1992 First joint venture established - Suzhou ALSTOM T&D Switchgear Co. Ltd.
• 1999  ALSTOM (China) Investment Co. Ltd. was founded in Beijing with registered capital of US$30 million, which was substantially increased since then.

Nuclear Power

ALSTOM is the world's leading provider of nuclear Conventional Island solutions that encompass steam turbine generator units, nuclear power plant management system, as well as electrical & control systems. ALSTOM is the world's No.1 supplier of nuclear steam turbines and generators. In May 2005, ALSTOM has won a contract with Dongfang Electric Group Corporation (DEC) for the supply of 2x1000 MW Arabelle steam turbine and generator packages for phase II of Ling Ao nuclear power station.

Boilers & Environment Control

ALSTOM has made major contributions to the environmental protection in China, as it has provided or transferred leading technologies including clean coal energy, Electric Static Precipitator (ESP), Fabric Filter (FF), Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), Flue Gas DeNOx (SCR), waste to energy and ash handling systems to various Chinese power plants.

To date, ALSTOM has supplied almost all of the imported utility boilers in China, besides transferring the various advanced boiler technology to local manufacturers.  ALSTOM intends to further develop its boiler business in China by creating local, industrial presence.

Power Conversion

Power Conversion Business of ALSTOM is the final link in the power supply chain for clients worldwide.  As an industry leader in electrical engineering, a systems integrator and a designer and manufacturer of a wide range of motors, generators, drives and drive systems, we provide single-source solutions in power electronics and automation for a broad range of markets including metals, marine & offshore, oil & gas, power generation, materials handling and process industries.

ALSTOM Wuhan Automation Co. Ltd. established in October 2000 with Wuhan Iron & Steel Group Automation Co. Ltd.  The joint venture, in which ALSTOM has 60% shares, specialises in the supply for electrical equipment (drives, automation) and services (engineering, software, customer services) for metals and paper projects in the industrial field.

Shipping

ALSTOM is a world leader for the building of high-added value ships.  The activity is based in France, at the shipyards, of Chantiers de l'Atlantique and ALSTOM Leroux Naval.

Future Prospects

ALSTOM's strategy in China is to be present locally and industrially for the long term. To this end, the company established a program of training and developing its own Chinese managers, while at the same time creating an industrial presence through joint ventures or co-operation with Chinese partners, whereby ALSTOM transfers technical know-how and managerial expertise to China.
