Ernst & Young established its Hong Kong office in 1973. The firm was one of the first international professional services firms permitted by the Chinese government to establish a representative office in Beijing in 1981. It was also one of the first firms approved by the Chinese government to establish a joint venture firm, Ernst & Young Hua Ming, in Beijing in 1992. Ernst & Young merged with one of China's Largest and most highly regarded local accounting firms, Shanghai-based Da Hua, in 2001. The merger was the first of its kind between a local Chinese and an International accountant firm.
