The 16th Asian Games is not just the biggest international sports event that Guangzhou has ever hosted in its history, but also a huge platform of itself where Guangzhou has presented its unique culture and charm to Asia in its entirety. By tapping into the opportunities generated by the Games, Guangzhou's tourism industry has scaled a new height. Statistics from Guangzhou Tourism Bureau show that between Nov. 12th and Nov. 27th, Guangzhou received a total of 8.66 million tourists, up by 42.10 % over the same period of last year. Of those tourists, 3.8619 million stayed in hotels, up by 32.22%. As a result, seven billion Yuan of tourism revenues have been generated during the Asian Games.

The increased revenue is in part, attributable to some seventy new itineraries greatly promoted by the tourism bureau before the Asian Games. The one-day tour itinerary has been most popular among tourists. During the Asian Games, twenty-seven main tourist resorts in Guangzhou received 2.1325 million tourists, a year-on-year increase of 21.78%. What is worth noting is that though four of the companies that provide Pearl-River cruises were closed for business during the Games, this tourism activity still managed to attract 136,000 tourists, up by 218.16%.
