In 1984, Guangzhou and Zhanjiang, together with 12 other coastal cities in China, were further opened up and allowed to establish economic and technological development zones.
In 1984, China further opened 14 coastal cities鈥擠alian, Qinhuangdao, Tianjin, Yantai, Qingdao, Lianyungang, Nantong, Shanghai, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang and Beihai鈥攖o overseas investment. Then, beginning in 1985, the state decided to further expand the open coastal areas, extending the open economic zones of the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, the Xiamen-Zhangzhou-Quanzhou Triangle in south Fujian, Shandong Peninsula, Liaodong Peninsula, Hebei and Guangxi into an open coastal belt.
