2-year countdown to Guangzhou Asian Games

Today, on November 12, 2008, people in Guangzhou celebrated the 2-year countdown to the 16th Asian Games, which is to be inaugurated on November 12, 2010. A grand launch ceremony of the countdown was held on the south square of the Tianhe Sports Center.

Starting at 8 p.m., the ceremony was featured by splendid fireworks and sensational performances. Husain Al-Musallam, Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Yu Zaiqing, Deputy Director of the State General Administration of Sports and Vice President of the Chinese Olympic Committee, and Huang Huahua, Executive President of the Guangzhou Asian Games Orgazing Committee (GAGOC) and Governor of Guangdong Province attended the ceremony and addressed the audience.

Around 8:55 p.m., the countdown billboard started operation in the cheers of the excited crowd, showing that the Guangzhou Asian Games was 730 days away.

Meanwhile, the 鈥淩oad of Asia鈥 tour was also launched. Jointly organized by the OCA and GAGOC, the tour would be taken by representatives from sponsors, professionals, volunteers and media workers along the Land Silk Road and the Ocean Silk Road and reach a number of Asian countries and regions in the next twelve months, carrying the best wishes of the Chinese people to people in other parts of Asia and spreading the spirits of the Guangzhou Asian Games to Asia and the world.

Guangzhou was selected as the host city of the 16th Asian Games on July 1, 2004. It will be the second Chinese city to host the Games. Beijing hosted the 11th Asian Games in 1990.
