Spring Festival (CNY) is on the way. GDToday is launching a special event next Friday (Jan. 19th ) to celebrate the Lunar New Year with our readers! We are giving you a chance to get involved in a real one off cultural experience.

First take a look at this beautiful and exquisite Canton (known in the industry as Kwon glazed) porcelain:

You must know what's coming next...

How would you like to try your hand at producing your very own plate and glaze it with your own bare hands? Well your chance has arrived my friend!

A free training class on making Canton porcelain provided by reknowned potter Xu Junru, and you can take your plate home in your grubby mitts. The normal price of a course like this 500 RMB, but just this once you can enjoy it for free!

During the workshop, you will also learnthe history of Kwon ware and the culture surrounding it. Guided by theinstructor, you will paint your favorite New Year’s pattern on the plate inglaze.

The whole event will be broadcast live on theinternet, and so you will also have the chance to broadcast any New Yeargreetings you might have to your family and friends through our cameras.

Your handmade plate will either make a nice souvenirof your time working or studying in Guangzhou, or then again maybe if it'sreally good you can send it to your family and friends as a gift!

Xu Junru, our instructor for this event, inherited the craft of producing Kwon ware. Xu also holds a Masters degree in porcelain painting and firing. As an artisan and a senior technician, Xu is experienced in teaching this handicraft.

Kwon ware came to being in the Qing, more than 300 years ago and achieved fame around the globe due to its lustrous colours. It was once a favorite of the royal families of Europe and has been exported in quantity to numerous countries since the 1600’s. In 2008, the art of producing Kwon ware was listed on the national intangible cultural heritage register.
