LARGER restaurants in Shenzhen are expected to be full on Chinese lunar New Year's Eve as most people prefer to have their New Year's meal at restaurants although some will order takeout to eat and celebrate in the comfort of their homes.

Reports said more than 80 percent of seats in major restaurants have been booked for dinner Jan. 28, the New Year's Eve in Chinese lunar calendar.

The dinner-time meal is regarded as the most important feast for Chinese families in a year, and is a big moment for family reunions as all family members are expected to sit together.

Some Cantonese restaurants in the Huaqiangbei business area said they began accepting reservations one month ago, and nearly all tables have been booked for dinner between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. But restaurant employees say seats will still be available after 7:30 p.m. for people who don't mind dining late.

According to a survey by local newspapers, a meal usually costs between 1,000 yuan (US$123) and 2,000 yuan. Diners can either order from a set dinner menu or choose dishes as they like.

Earlier reports said some Shenzhen families plan to have the New Year meal at home this year, which, as they say, will enhance the festive atmosphere.

But most are still in favor of having dinner at restaurants to save the trouble of cooking and cleanup at home.
