Board chairman and CEO of Qualcomm, Irwin Mark Jacobs, and his son Jeff Jacobs, president of global development of Qualcomm, both presented at the CDMA New Technology and Applications Exhibition in Guangzhou on July 18. Representatives of major Chinese companies in the field also attended the event. In Qualcomm's eyes, telecom industry in Pearl River Delta (PRD) has become a significant part of global CDMA industry, as well as Qualcomm's important business partner.
Sources said that Jacobs' had met with the provincial governor as well as leaders of major CDMA companies in PRD during their stay in Guangzhou. The major topics of the meeting cover further cooperation between CDMA product manufacturers in PRD and BREW developer, potential opportunities after China looses control on 3G, and so on.
At the exhibition, Guangzhou Jinpeng Corporation became the first Chinese company to win the BREW Development Contribution Prize. The company has developed 17 wireless application products for the wireless BREW platform of Qualcomm.
Not long before the exhibition, Qualcomm opened its Guangzhou office, the third in China after Beijing and Shanghai.
Months before, Qualcomm made public its 100 million USD venture investment plan in China, and Irwin Jocabs said that he believed many object enterprises are located in Guangdong.
Besides Guangzhou Jinpeng Corporation, many top telecom companies in PRD attended the exhibition, such as ZTE and Huawei.
ZTE Corporation, located in Shenzhen, No.1 CDMA product manufacturer in China, had signed contracts with BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) to build India's national CDMA WILL network at the beginning of this year.
Huawei Technologies, which is also located in Shenzhen, is the biggest provider of CDMA 450 products in global market. In all CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries that adopted CDMA 450 network, Huawei managed to sign contracts with 14 major cities except Moscow and St. Petersburg.
