Former world number one Martina Hingis set up a quarter-final clash with Kim Clijsters at the French Open by surviving a tense battle with Israel's Shahar Peer.

Having been forced into a second day by poor light on Sunday evening, the match resumed at one set all and the first game of the day proved a marathon one.

Hingis eventually secured the early break after 14 minutes of play but it meant little when the Israeli broke straight back.

However, Peer, who ousted Russian sixth seed Elena Dementieva in the third round, was unable to sustain her early level and Hingis broke twice more before serving for victory against her teenage opponent.

Peer, who had been aiming to become the first Israeli woman to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, clawed back a break before surrendering her own serve again to allow Hingis to go through.
