Arsenal secure a 1-0 win over Manchester City thanks to a penalty-kick from Rober Pires while Jermaine Jenas scored a second-half free-kick to earn Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

Arsenal should have won by a greater margin at Highbury if they had not squandered some chances.

Pires gave the Gunners the lead from the penalty spot, but the Frenchman missed the chance to score from a second spot-kick.

Surprisingly the French winger tapped the penalty looking for Henry to follow through and score, but City cleared leaving Arsenal with egg on their face.

At the Old Trafford, Mikael Silvestre capitalised on an early mistake from Paul Robinson to stab home after the England keeper spilled Ruud van Nistelrooy's tame header.

United looked comfortable at the back until Jenas scored a delightful free-kick in the second half to secure a share of the spoils for Spurs.

Wigan Athletic are up into fourth in The Premiership following a stunning 2-0 win against Aston Villa.

The Latics have raised a few eyebrows this season and took the lead after half an hour when Aaron Hughes sliced the ball into his own net.

The visitors defended resolutely in the second half and hit Villa on the break to bag a decisive second.

The impressive Jimmy Bullard sent Alan Mahon away and he drilled home past Thomas Sorensen with a fine left-footed finish.

Liverpool's league form continues to disappoint with the European champions going down 2-0 to Fulham.

Collins John's first half goal put The Cottagers in front with Luis Boa Morte adding a crucial second in the dying stages.

In the early kick-off Blackburn piled more pressure onto Birmingham following a 2-0 success at Ewood Park.

Following a scoreless opening half, Rovers took the lead shortly after the break when Paul Dickov fired home from the penalty spot.

The visitors rarely threatened and the points were wrapped up late on when Craig Bellamy slotted home following a mix-up in the visitors' defence.

In the evening fixture, high-flying Charlton came from behind to claim a 2-1 win at Portsmouth.

Pompey started in fine form and took a deserved lead through Dario Silva after 14 minutes - his first goal for the club.

However, Charlton were a different side after the interval and goals from Darren Ambrose and Dennis Rommedahl gave the visitors the points.
