The Yuexiu District Government plans to give a 33-million-yuan facelift to Beijing Road in preparation of forthcoming Asian Games. The area centered on the pedestrianized street on Beijing Road will be expanded and transformed into an internationally renowned center of Guangfu culture, commerce, trade, and tourism.

"The pedestrianized street, which is less than 600 meters long, will be expanded into a center of commerce, trade and tourism that extends to Wende Road on the east, Xihu Road on the west, Yanjiang Road on the south, and the compound of the Guangdong Provincial Finance Department on the north," said Bian Yong, Yuexiu District's deputy magistrate, during the January 19 press conference on the release of the Beijing road renovation plan. He also stated that the renovation is aimed at showcasing the rich cultural and historic heritage on Beijing Road, promoting the interaction between commerce and tourism, and bringing the local cultural legacy into greater focus.

At present, the pedestrianized street on Beijing Road extends 590 meters from the compound of the Provincial Finance Department to the Huifu Road intersection. The project will connect West Fuxue Street to Beijing Road and Wende Road and expand the pedestrianized street into a center of Guangfu culture, commerce, trade, and tourism.

The renovation works for the entire length of Beijing Road and Tianzi Wharf involve a combined total area of about 43,000 square meters, and are scheduled for completion by May 31.
