The new Guangzhou Opera House is still under construction on the banks of the Pearl River in Zhujiang New Town, but it's already attracting a lot of attention due to its bold and futuristic design.

Construction and the exterior decoration are now completed. Originally scheduled to open in December, construction was delayed due to a fire which ravaged the site in May 2009. The complex is now thought to be completed by May this year and shall be inaugurated by the Italian opera Turandot.

With an investment of 1.38 billion RMB, the opera house covers an area of 42, 393 square meters.
