Today (Oct 26) is Chongyang Festival, also called Double Nine Festival, a day to celebrate the elderly. According to the customs, it's a day to go walking in the mountains with friends and family, to drink Chrysanthemum wine, and ask for good luck during the coming year. Since yesterday, over 70,000 people have climbed Baiyun Mountain and many more are expected tonight.
To ensure the safety of climbers, vehicles have been banned from Baiyun Mountain as well as many other smaller mountains across the city until tomorrow. The entrance fee to Baiyun Mountain has been raised from 5 to 10 RMB.
