Adopting 'Maire' Yew to celebrate World Environment Day

Children is looking into Maire Yew

On World Environment Day, which falls on June 5th, Guangzhou citizens adopt 10,000 Maire Yew plants, a rare spices dubbed as panda among the plants.

A businessman, Mr. Zhou, adopts 2000 Maire Yew and is going to plant them on the hills next to his own enterprise and take good care of them. And each of the middle and primary schools in Tianhe Districts adopt one, making their student know more about Maire Yew and the importance of protecting the rare spices.

Enviromental Protection toies made by Children

Besides tree-adopting, the Day sees a series of other themed activities, like an exhibition of awarded pieces in 'environmental protection innovation contest', of which the contestants are all Guangzhou youths and children. The displaying 38 pieces are selected out of the 53,000 works summated by 188 middle and primary school in the municipality.

A group of eight elders, 7 male and 1 female with average aged 65, cycled from Tianjin, north China to Guangzhou, south China, to inspect the eco-system and disseminate the information on environmental protection on their way. They spends 26 days on this 3,300-km journey and arrives in Guangzhou on June 4th.
